How is your digestion? No, seriously, how is it? Do you struggle with diarrhea, constipation, gas/bloating, or stomach pain? Even heartburn can be a common ailment for many people. But, these symptoms do not have to rule your life! I would be willing to bet that the mass majority of the population suffers from tummy troubles in some form or another. That’s a lot of people!
 
Did you know that a healthy digestive tract actually functions so optimally that it would not be surprising to have to go “number 2” as many times a day as you eat! Three times?? And did you know that the color of your stool also speaks volumes about what and how you are eating. Light tan is a healthy poo. And as crazy as it sounds, your poop really shouldn’t be horrifically smelly. When it is, that can be a tell tale sign that you’ve eaten something your body really didn’t find friendly. Think about it!
 
gut-imageSo, what can you do to get back on track toward a healthy digestive tract? Be more conscientious about what you are consuming. Are you eating a lot of meat? Are you consuming a lot of sweets? These things in moderation are not necessarily a bad thing. But did you know that it can take up to 3 days to digest a steak? Think about that. You take a piece of meat and put it into a cabinet for 3 days in a balmy 98.6 degrees. What do you imagine that will be like by day 3? Probably not very rosy, huh? While our stomachs use acid and bile to digest, consuming a steak for every meal puts a lot of pressure on our stomach to work overtime. And let’s face it, none of us want to work overtime all the time. So, this is when gas and bloating can become more noticeable.
 
Many people struggle at the idea of a full-time plant-based diet, but most people also don’t consume near enough plant-based products to give our stomachs the digestive enzymes necessary to digest our food more efficiently. We have an incredible ecosystem happening in our belly. That ecosystem depends on us to give it the nourishment it needs to thrive. So, go enjoy your steak, but make sure there’s a veggie or fruit included with each of your meals throughout the day so that those awesome enzymes can step in and cut the work in half.
